About New Norfolk
New Norfolk is a town on the Derwent River, in
the south-east of Tasmania, Australia. At the
2011 census, New Norfolk had a population of
5,543.
Situated north-west of Hobart on the Lyell
Highway, New Norfolk is a modern Australian
regional centre which retains evidence of its
pioneer heritage.
Located 37 km north of Hobart and 30 m above
sea level, New Norfolk is one of the largest
centres in Tasmania.
It is a comment on the Englishness of Tasmania
that there are towns like New Norfolk which are
built around a large village green. Apart from
its village green and its name, New Norfolk is a
town with a large number of interesting historic
buildings.
